How to Keep a Morkie Warm in Winter — Cold Weather Gear Guide

Georgie is 8 pounds. He does not have the body mass to retain heat effectively in cold weather. His first winter, I did not take this seriously. After one walk in 25-degree weather where he lifted each paw alternately off the freezing sidewalk and looked at me with pure betrayal in his eyes, I took it very seriously.

Do Small Dogs Really Need Coats?

Yes, actually. Dogs under 15 pounds, dogs with short or fine coats (like morkies), and older dogs genuinely get cold faster than larger, double-coated breeds. Below 45°F, a coat is beneficial. Below 32°F, it is essential for small dogs. Below 20°F — keep walks short regardless.

What Georgie Actually Wears

Fleece Sweater (35°F – 50°F)

A simple fleece sweater is enough for cool fall and mild winter walks. Easy to put on, washable, and Georgie tolerates it without too much protest. Fleece sweaters for small dogs.

Waterproof Puffer Jacket (Below 35°F)

A waterproof outer layer keeps the cold and wet out. Georgie wears his for anything below freezing. Look for one with a harness opening or ring so you don’t have to take it off at every corner. Waterproof dog jackets for small dogs.

Dog Boots (Below 20°F or Salted Sidewalks)

The most dramatic part of our winter routine. Georgie’s first experience with boots involved a full minute of high-stepping while looking deeply confused. He adapted. The salt and ice melt on sidewalks is genuinely damaging to paw pads — boots prevent chemical burns and cracking. Small dog winter boots.

Paw Care in Winter

Even with boots, apply paw balm before and after winter walks. It protects against cracking and soothes any irritation. Wipe paws when you come inside regardless — salt ingestion from licking paws is a real risk. Dog paw balm.

Georgie now walks into his jacket cooperatively. He has accepted that winter requires equipment. Dr. Georgie has a healthy respect for thermodynamics.
